“By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead” (Hebrew 11:4}.
Faith is one of the most important themes in the Bible, and it plays a very important role in the life of a believer. The story of Cain and Abel is a good example. Cain and Abel were brothers, sons of Adam and Eve after the fall when they sinned against God, and then being driven out of the Garden of Eden for their disobedience. But God had shown them that though they were sinners, their sins could be put a way. He told them that if they brought him something, he would be pleased with them and he would forgive their sins that they had committed,
These two brothers wanted to bring something to God. Abel was a shepherd, and he went out to his flock and chose the most perfect Lamb he could find. Then having killed it, he laid it on an alter. His brother, Cain was a farmer. He went into his farm and brought a pile of fruits on his alter. But God accepted Abel’s offerings and rejected Cain’s offerings. Fire came down from heaven and burnt up the lamb on Abel’s altar, but Cain’s fruit was untouched
Abel had learnt that he was a sinner and that he deserved to die, and that was why he brought the little Lamb. God had shown him this, and had told him that another must die instead. The little Lamb that died for Abel was a “type” of God’s son, Jesus Christ who was to be sent to die on the cross for the sins of the world.
